The true origin of Sash windows continues to be a mystery. However, Ham House which was built in 17th-century, still has its original sash windows, leading us to think that the design could have originated from this period. The timing of this theory is practically perfect as following the rebuild of London after the great fire, sash windows could be seen on most dwellings during the Georgian period.
The great fire of London was not the only influence on the development of Georgian architecture. Style and class played their part too. In the late 1600s, window tax and glass tax were both introduced. The glass tax prevented anyone other than the extremely wealthy from having large panes.
So, many homes during this time used smaller panes of glass held together by small wooden frames. If you are looking for Georgian style windows, then we can add decorative features such as Georgian Bars or Astragal Bars to replicate this beautiful traditional style.
As we moved into the late 1800s, the tax on glass was abolished and the price of it fell dramatically. As glass manufacturing technology developed, larger panes became available to everyone, leading to the most recognisable characteristic of traditional sash windows, the ‘horns’.
Created to provide additional support for the heavier panes of glass, they now are a highly requested decorative feature. If you have a Victorian property in the East Midlands and are looking for authentic replicas of Victorian style windows, then this striking sash window style is perfect.

Sliding sash windows, also known as vertical sliders, are a traditional window style that has been popular in Nottingham and the East Midlands for over 200 years. They feature one or two moving glazed panels that slide up and down independently of each other.
One disadvantage of sliding sash windows is that they can be more expensive than other window styles due to their complex design and the amount of skilled labour required to manufacture and install them.
In terms of security, sliding sash windows can be made to be secure with the use of locks and toughened glass, which can resist break-ins. The Nottingham Window Company also offers a range of sliding sash windows that meet current and anticipated security and performance standards.
